Begin with the institution
The Reserve Bank of India is the central bank. Its responsibilities include monetary policy, currency management and regulation and supervision within its remit. A commercial bank serves customers through deposits and lending; a central bank has a broader system role.
Cash Reserve Ratio refers to the specified share of relevant bank liabilities maintained as cash with RBI. Statutory Liquidity Ratio concerns specified liquid assets maintained by banks. The instruments are related to banking liquidity but are not interchangeable.
Keep rates dated
Policy rates and reserve requirements can change. Record the announcement date beside any number and verify it against RBI before an exam. This lesson deliberately tests definitions rather than claiming a live repo rate. When comparing instruments, identify who holds the reserve and what form the asset takes.
